Toy Story Land
Disney used the D23 Expo in August 2105 to announce two new “lands” for Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Toy Story Land and Star Wars Land.
One part of the major redevelopment at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is the creation of an immersive 11 acre “Toy Story Land” based on the popular Disney-Pixar animated films.
Toy Story Land will be themed like a play area in Andy’s backyard and the guests will feel like they have shrunk to the size of the toys with giant building blocks, game board pieces, plastic buckets and toys. Andy is the little boy in the Toy Story movies.
The existing and very popular Toy Story Midway Mania! attraction will be enhanced by the addition of a third track to increase capacity and hopefully reduce wait times. Toy Story Midway Mania! was the last major new attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and it opened in 2008.
It is a 4D (3D plus special effects like air blasts and water sprays) virtual shooting gallery ride. You ride around the Toy Story Midway Games Play Set in Carnival Ride Trams and shoot both stationary and moving target objects in a series of five fast-paced games. You can complete with your friends to get the highest score or beat your own personal best. There are no height restrictions.
There will also be two brand new attractions:
The first is a family roller coaster called Slinky Dog where guests will ride on the back of Slinky Dog. As you ride around the land, you will get to see your favourite characters and trigger animations as you pass them along the track.
The second is a spinning saucer ride called Little Green Aliens that looks similar to the twin Dumbo ride at Magic Kingdom. As you spin around you will see the arcade game claw overhead.
There is also to be a new restaurant called Woody’s Lunch Box themed on a tin lunchbox. It will be a walk-up quick-service restaurant serving old-fashioned soda floats and other tasty treats in partnership with Mini Babybel.
At the time of the D23 announcement there are no timescales for the completion of Toy Story Land and the announcement was only a preliminary look at the proposed changes. What is missing from this announcement is any plans to bring Cars Land to Orlando.
Subsequently Disney has confirmed that Toy Story Land will open in the summer of 2018.
