In May 2015, Universal’s Islands of Adventure opened a new meet-and-greet attraction called “Raptor Encounter” in the Jurassic Park section of the park, located between the Discovery Centre and Camp Jurassic.
The opening of Raptor Encounter was timed to coincide with the release of the fourth Jurassic Park film, called “Jurassic World” which debuts on June 12.
At certain times of the day you can meet one of two life sized 9 foot Velociraptors face-to-face and get a perfect photo selfie. They are called Lucy and Ethel.
As you approach the enclosure, you see a paddock with a section of electrified fencing similar to those seen in the films, with appropriately labelled “Danger! 10,000 volts” signs.
A voice over, gives you details about Velociraptors and warns you not to get too close! The human puppet operated Velociraptors are incredibly realistic with rapid movements and lots of noise.
When the park first opened in 1999, there was a Triceratops Encounter in roughly the same location. Featuring animatronic models you could see the large 24 foot long Triceratops dinosaurs in three different paddocks.
The attraction closed in 2003 and reopened briefly in 2007. It opened again in December 2010 as the Triceratops Discovery Trail. This time as a short walkthrough attraction, you could see an adult Triceratops and sometimes a baby as well. It was only open seasonally to help alleviate the crowds flocking to the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter but finally closed in 2012.
