Amtrak Auto Train Service 2026 Guide

Amtrak Auto Train is the simplest rail option for travellers who want to bring their own vehicle to Florida without driving the full I-95 corridor. In 2026 it still runs daily, nonstop between Lorton, Virginia, and Sanford, Florida, with a scheduled journey time of about 17 hours 29 minutes.

For many families, snowbirds, and road-trippers, that makes it less about cheap transport and more about buying back time, reducing driving fatigue, and avoiding hotel and fuel costs on a long two-day drive.

What the Auto Train does well

The big advantage is obvious: you arrive in Florida with your own car, SUV, van, or motorcycle, so you skip both the long interstate drive and the car-hire step at the other end. It is especially useful if you are staying beyond Orlando, carrying lots of family gear, or planning a wider Florida road trip after arrival. For broader rail context, also see our guide to getting to Florida by rail and the list of Amtrak stations in Florida.

Route, stations and timing

Amtrak’s official route page currently shows the Auto Train running between Lorton, VA (LOR) and Sanford, FL (SFA). Lorton is about 20 miles south of Washington, DC, while Sanford is north of Orlando and convenient for Central Florida arrivals.

Amtrak currently tells passengers to arrive at least 120 minutes before departure. Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m. on the day of travel. Check-in closes at 2:00 p.m. for oversized vehicles, motorcycles, trailers, and Priority Offloading customers, and at 2:30 p.m. for standard and extended vehicles.

Those cut-offs matter. The Auto Train is not a turn-up-late service, and Amtrak says exceptions cannot be made.

Vehicle rules to know before booking

Amtrak accepts standard vehicles, many extended vehicles such as trucks, vans and 3-row SUVs, and two-wheel motorcycles, but you should reserve the vehicle space when you book. The current official guidance says vehicles wider than 84 inches including mirrors cannot be carried, and vehicles over 18 feet long need special arrangements and extra payment.

Factory-fitted roof racks are allowed if they stay empty, while temporary roof luggage racks are not. Rear bicycle racks are permitted subject to Amtrak’s waiver and size rules. Because the detailed size categories are strict and can change, it is worth checking Amtrak’s live vehicle requirements page before you commit, especially for large SUVs, pickups, trailers, or anything non-standard.

Coach or sleeper?

Coach is the lowest-cost way to use the Auto Train. Amtrak currently describes wide reclining seats with legroom, outlets, tray tables, Wi‑Fi, café access, and a complimentary continental breakfast before arrival.

If you want the journey to feel more like an overnight travel day than an endurance exercise, the private-room options are much stronger. Amtrak still offers Roomettes, Bedrooms, Family Rooms, and Accessible Bedrooms. Private-room customers get priority boarding, complimentary dinner and hot breakfast, access to the First Class lounge onboard, and attendant service.

How pricing works in 2026

There is no single fixed “Auto Train price” in 2026. Amtrak pricing is live and demand-based, so your total cost depends on the passenger fare, the vehicle charge, and whether you book Coach or a private room. Larger vehicles and priority offloading can add more.

In practical terms, the value calculation is usually this: compare the Auto Train total against fuel, one or more overnight hotel stops, food on the road, tolls, wear on your vehicle, and the hassle cost of a long interstate drive. If you were already planning to pay for a stopover on I-95, the Auto Train can make more sense than the headline fare first suggests.

When the Auto Train is worth it

It is most compelling when you genuinely want your own vehicle in Florida, are travelling with a lot of luggage, or would otherwise split the drive over multiple days. It is less compelling if you are travelling light, only visiting Orlando, and could easily fly plus use transfers or a rental car for a short stay.
