Tampa Weather, Temperature and Rainfall Guide

The Tampa Bay area usually gives visitors a very appealing Florida mix: warm Gulf Coast weather, a long outdoor season, and milder winter conditions than many parts of the United States. The catch is that summer is very hot, very humid, and much wetter than first-time visitors sometimes expect.
If your holiday includes beaches, baseball, Gulf Coast touring or Busch Gardens Tampa Bay, this is one of the most useful weather pages to read before you set dates.

What Tampa weather is usually like
Tampa, Clearwater and St Petersburg are warm for much of the year, with Gulf breezes helping the coast feel a little easier than the more built-up inland parts of Central Florida. Winter is generally mild, spring is one of the best times to visit, and summer brings the classic Florida combination of heat, humidity and afternoon storms.
For many visitors, the weather question is less about whether Tampa is warm enough and more about how much humidity and rain they are willing to travel with.
Best time to visit Tampa Bay
March to May is often the strongest all-round answer. You still get warm weather, but usually with less oppressive humidity than the core summer season. The cooler winter months can also work very well, especially for sightseeing, sport, and more comfortable city-and-beach combinations.
If you want the hottest beach weather, summer delivers it, but you should expect a much wetter and stickier holiday rhythm.
Rainfall and thunderstorm pattern
The wetter part of the year usually builds from late spring and peaks through summer, with June to September being the most obvious thunderstorm period. These storms often do not ruin an entire day, but they do change how you should plan it: earlier beach time, flexible afternoons, and a willingness to move indoors when the weather breaks.

Hurricane awareness still matters
Tampa Bay visitors should treat the Atlantic hurricane season seriously, especially from late summer into early autumn. A storm does not need a direct hit to disrupt beaches, flights, transport, or accommodation plans. Read our Florida hurricane guide if you are booking in season.
How Tampa compares with Orlando
Tampa Bay can feel a little easier than inland Orlando because of the coast, but it is still firmly in Florida's hot-weather system. If you are splitting time between the two, compare this page with our Orlando weather guide and Gulf Coast guide.
