Toy Story Land officially opened on June 30, 2018 and is themed like a play area in Andy’s backyard, the little boy in the Disney-Pixar “Toy Story” movies.
Everything is designed to make you feel small like Andy’s toys. There are giant building blocks, game board pieces, plastic buckets and other toys like Crayons, Green Army Men, Cooties, Rubik’s Cubes, Tinker Toys and gigantic footprints left by Andy.
Even the benches are made out of things like popsicle sticks. You can also see oversized Toy Story characters like Woody, Jessie, Buzz Lightyear, Rex, Wheezy, Mr. Spell, Mr. Mike and Green Army Men.
The existing and very popular Toy Story Midway Mania! attraction has been enhanced by the addition of a third track to increase capacity and hopefully reduce wait times. Toy Story Midway Mania! was the last major new attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and it opened in 2008.
There are also two brand new attractions, a roller coaster and a spinning saucer ride.
Toy Story Midway Mania!
Toy Story Midway Mania! is a 4D (3D plus special effects like air blasts and water sprays) virtual shooting gallery ride. You ride around the Toy Story Midway Games Play Set in Carnival Ride Trams and shoot both stationary and moving target objects in a series of five fast-paced games. You can complete with your friends to get the highest score or beat your own personal best. There are no height restrictions.
Slinky Dog Dash Coaster
The first new ride is a family roller coaster called “Slinky Dog Dash” where guests can ride on the back of Slinky Dog on a roller coaster that looks like it has been assembled from Andy’s Mega Coaster Play Kit. The ride offers some G forces as well as “air time” and sits somewhere between Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (both at Magic Kingdom) in terms of intensity.
As you ride around the land, you see your favourite characters and trigger animations as you pass them along the track. Look out for Wheezy the penguin singing “You Got a Friend in Me” as you come to the end of the ride.
Unlike a lot of roller coaster rides, the Slinky Dog Dash coaster tracks winds its way through a lot of Toy Story Land giving everyone ample opportunities to see the ride from different angles as well as other Hollywood Studios landmarks like the Chinese Theater, Tower of Terror and of course Star Wars Land.
Alien Swirling Saucers
The second is a twin spinning saucer ride called “Alien Swirling Saucers” with little green aliens in flying saucers and guests in a rocket. It is similar in concept to Mad Tea Party, the swirling teacup ride at Magic Kingdom and the Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree ride from Cars Land at Disney California Adventure.
It is based on an alien play set Andy won at Pizza Planet. As you spin around you see the arcade game claw overhead, just waiting to drop.
Woody’s Lunch Box
Toy Story Land has a new restaurant called Woody’s Lunch Box themed on a tin lunchbox. It is a walk-up quick-service restaurant serving old-fashioned soda floats, classic American food and other tasty treats in partnership with Mini Babybel.
Disney used the D23 Expo in August 2105 to announce two new “lands” for Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Toy Story Land and Star Wars Land, subsequently called “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge”. Toy Story Land is one part of the major redevelopment at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and offers an immersive 11 acre “Toy Story Land” based on the popular Disney-Pixar animated films.
At the time of the original D23 announcement there were no timescales for the completion of Toy Story Land and the announcement was only a preliminary look at the proposed changes. What was missing from this announcement was any plans to bring Cars Land to Orlando.
Subsequently Disney confirmed that Toy Story Land would open in the summer of 2018 and in February 2018 they gave the official opening date as June 30, 2018. There was a soft opening in the weeks leading up to the official opening date.
